Dr. Koen's current scientific research focuses on quantum computing (QC) and DNA data storage. Starting 14 years ago, I was, most likely, the first computer engineer in the world to look at quantum computing. The team I built at TU Delft was responsible for the electronic control of super-and semiconducting qubits and developed the notion of the full stack for a QC. QC research – Although QC has great potential, its underlying technology remains immature. A major reason is the lack of consensus among physicists on how to produce high-quality qubits using various technological approaches. Moreover, many errors still occur when quantum gates are executed on available qubits. In this context, after visiting top US universities, INTEL became convinced that the QuTech Full Stack, as I defined it, was the correct direction. Consequently, they decided to establish a research facility in Delft for their QC activities, with a budget of $50 million US.
